Telling good fats from bad

With its concentrated source of calories, fat can cause obesity if eaten to excess.

This continues to rise at alarming rates – a government report has revealed that half of us will be obese within 25 years – so it’s right to ensure we don’t eat too much fat, especially the not-so-good sort.

However, although obesity is worrying, we mustn’t just isolate fat as bad and avoid it at all costs – our response needs to be more measured and informed. We do need some fat in our diet – it carries fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.

All aspects of our health are influenced by these vitamins, from building strong bones and manufacturing hormones, to healthy hair and skin. This can explain why people who avoid anything with fat in it often end up looking wrinkly before their time.

Men who don’t have enough fat in their bodies also run the risk of interfering with essential sex-related hormones such as testosterone, which can lead to impotence and low sex drive.

The same applies to women who are too thin, as they don’t consume enough fat to help their bodies manufacture enough oestrogen – a hormone essential to development and reproduction. OK, this isn’t as common a problem as obesity, but it’s important to acknowledge that the body needs some fat to help it function efficiently and feel well.
